5 out of 5 stars Girl in a Windy Meadow   August 6, 2008
In the year 1903, John William Waterhouse completed two paintings depicting girls in florid, windswept meadows. These were titled WINDFLOWERS and BOREAS. The latter, shown here, is one of my favorite paintings by Waterhouse. Its daffodils are what first attracted me to BOREAS; I love the March flowers, which in BOREAS add a pop of bright, clear color to the cloudy landscape and the girl's gray wrap and deep blue gown. As so often with Waterhouse (and the Pre-Raphaelites, whom he emulated), surface loveliness here masks a more profound meaning derived from legend and myth. In ancient times, the wind was considered not a natural but an otherwordly phenomenon -- even a god (Boreas). The mysteriousness of the wind is reflected in the girl's puzzled expression; she knows not from whence cometh this force which sweeps her garments and would propel her forward, and which she raises an arm against. A refreshing picture to see, BOREAS looks best matted or framed in yellow, to match the daffodil and contrast with the blues. My copy has been fitted with a yellow mat and a white frame, to beautiful effect.
